McNeil 7k groomed and 5 k groomed and classic tracks set Saturday evening, 3-24. Busy, beautiful day! Congrats to Homer Epic 100 overall winner Dan Folmar on a fat tire bike and ski champs Pete Alexson and Jan Spurkland! http://kachemaknordicskiclub.org/2011-12-events-calendar/homer-epic-100k/
Skiing is great at Lookout and McNeil and Baycrest.
Also Marathon Trail is reportedly groomed for skating from Diamond Ridge to Bridge Creek if not further. What more could you ask for?
Ski you on the trails. Kevin
The injured moose is reported to be in the same vicinity around the upper part of the 3K cutoff. McNeil was groomed 3-16 and Eveline was groomed 3-15. Please park in the lower parking lot at all times. Snow removal activities in the upper lot are performed in the evenings and weekends. Thanks
There is a badly injured moose–possible broken leg– currently residing on the 3K loop. The hope is she’ll stay there for a few days. She can only walk with great difficulty. The trail is closed at both ends with orange fencing. If you see her please treat her kindly.
The McNeil trails are in excellent condition. They were groomed late Friday afternoon.
Marathon trail is awesom from Kentons Yurt to Bridge Creek.
Anyone know if the trails are groomed after yesterday’s (Sat March 4)big snow?
3/2/12 Eveline and McNeil are in good shape and were groomed on Thursday and Friday. Watch out for several very stressed moose on the 5 and 7.5 K loops. They are reluctant to leave the ski trail due to the deep snow. If you ski with dogs you might want to use extra caution.
On Saturday, 3 of us rode the prospective 100 km, 63 mile Homer Epic race course from McNeil school up NE of Caribou Lake and back to McNeil. Beautiful country, following groomed Snowmad trails. If it comes together, the race will begin very early in the morning of March 24 for skiers, fat tire bikers, and snowshoers. Follow this site, the KNSC Facebook site, and/or http://kachemaknordicskiclub.org/events-information/
for current information.
Eveline was groomed Friday the 24th.. Great skiing.
2/24 2:00 pm Lookout hayfields and sprint loop groomed and track set. Excellent skiing. Millie’s marathon loop rolled. Trail a little rough but skiable.
FYI - There is a dead moose at lower baycrest. It is along the headwaters trail close to where it meets homestead. Be careful. It appears that a bear hasn’t found it yet but could be a problem in the future.
I would love to give some well deserved recognition to two awsome guys who made the special olymics winter games increadible….John and Mike. You both did such a great job grooming and marking the trails and your positive energy made such a difference to everyone around you. And the snow machine rides! I know one competeter who had never been on a snow machine ever and he loved it! Thanks again for your generous support! Hope to see you next year.
Saturday Feb. 20th Special Olympics Homer Region Winter Games at Lookout Mtn. Mike & John did an amazing job of grooming the trails, flagging the course and setting up the start and finish area. They went beyond any of our expectations by being with our athletes giving tons of encouragement and assisting them. Thanks to both of you for being “a fan” , supportive and making the athletes experience so much more, you totally rock. Thanks from all of us at Special Olympics….
McNeil was groomed Friday afternoon the 17th and skiing was fantastic. The Marathon trail is now groomed for skating after dozens of hours of volunteer work, some with privately owned equipment. Thank you volunteer groomers. I wish the ski club had a million dollars, so we could have a pisten bully at each ski site, and 3 full time, paid & qualified operators and trails that could accommodate that equipment. And free boat rides to get across the bay to access the new chair lift. Wishful thinking.
hey i was at the overlook and it was not groomed or has any other trails ive been on… i wish who grooms the ski trails would do it more often thanks
Eveline groomed last night. Tracks set. Windy this am. Ski it before it is blown in again .
5:00 pm 2/15 Hayfields, sprint loop, and perimeter groomed at Lookout. Soft but good skiing.
An inch of fresh snow on packed trails at McNeil - I hope it holds for the Wine & Cheese Tour on Sunday!
Mcneil and Eveline are skiing great..tracks set on McNeil.
Found a Samsung cell phone on the Roger’s Loop trail Sunday night. E-mail jenniferbando@hotmail.com to retreive.
We skied McNeil Canyon trails on 01/31/2012. Skate skied with a blue Toko glide wax and it was smooth fast and fun.
McNeil and Eveline groomed 1/30/12
Marathon Trail is roughed in and ready to ski. Just use caution on the downhills as there are a few rough spots. Tracks are set on Sunset, Farside, and Rucksack and conditions are prime for classic.
Lots of grooming activity on the Marathon Trail Jan 28& 29. Two machines pioneered the trail from Diamond Ridge to the yurt on Saturday, then 4 machines with 3 drags went from Diamond Rdg to Crossman Ridge and a bit beyond. It is skiable. If you could take a small saw, nippers, or even a wire cutter you could help cut out some of the brush. Beware of divits where machines turned around or got stuck.
I skated and classic the perimeter of Lookout Mtn. trails around noon on 01/14/2012. The groomers did a great job, however it is soft and slow due to the cold snow. I thought classic skiing was the better way to go, but had fun doing both.
McNeil and Eveline groomed 1/14
Lower Baycrest - Homestead, Master Blaster, College, & Headwaters were packed and dragged on Friday the 13th. No tracks set and trails are soft due to new snow and slow due to cold!
Eveline was groomed 1/1/.. great skiing.
Great skiing @ McNeil - thanks for the grooming (5k and 7.5k loops, plus sprint)!! Overnight the wind had blown over some classic tracks and narrowed the trail in a few places.
12/21/11 McNeil groomed this AM
Lookout Mountain. Best snow and trail conditions thus far this year. Awesome skating. Does more need to be said? Oh yeah get out and go….
12/16/11 McNeil and Eveline were groomed today. Conditions are good with a skate lane and a set track.
Skate skied McNeil yesterday at sundown…amazing colors and great trail. A little soft in spots but really nice for skating. Huge thanks to all you groomers! You are the best!
Lookout got 1-2″ and all the trails I skied on were great skiing - hayfields and around the perimeter of the hills & gullys. Thanks groomers!
12-8-11 12pm, Lookout trails and Hayfields groomed with some track set in Hayfield. Still some grass showing here and there but good skiing overall.
Lookout is getting tuned up for the high school races this weekend. The race trails (5k?) were corduroy, other trails were ungroomed powder - only the bunny tracks at sundown on Wednesday.
Eveline has been groomed. some sticks still showing, but it is groomed wide and was a good skate ski this am.
The parking lot at the Sunset Loop is “rough”. There is room for several vehicles, but the snow and frozen ground are uneven. 2wd and low clearance vehicles not recommended. Skiing at Sunset is very good, Midway has some grass, Homestead & Headwaters are a bit rough but OK for classical skiing, Lookout on Thanksgiving was very good to excellent.
Mcneil rolled, packed, brushed as of 11/25. It remains bumpy, and need additional base snow before dragging and leveling. X country skiing only, wi/ caution on downhills…
Great Tday suing at Lookout!
Great skiing at the Hayfields on Thursday afternoon 11-17-11. Corduroy all around. The trails around the stadium were wind packed, but skiable.
Rolled Homestead Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011. ok for classic rock skis. Brown bear, black bear, and wolf tracks. Beware. Bridge by the dump is out. Use the steel bridge.
