Successful work party on both 2/16/08 & 2/17/08 for the Diamond Ridge to Lookout connector trail. Gullies were shoveled, new section of trail was cleared and leveled going north out of Bridge Ck. Things are looking good but still not connected to Lookout. If the weather will cooperate, maybe next weekend.

2-18-08 Most of Lower Baycrest was packed with a roller today, although the snow is very wet and soft, it is still pretty good skiing.

2-14-08 Eveline was groomed before all the new snow of Friday and Saturday… Probably not much good now except for snowshoeing. Dave grooms Eveline every Thursday afternoon. Other groom from time to time.

Dave set tracks around Raven’s Way, Homestead, Demo Forest Loop, 1 K, and College Avenue Wednesday night. He said the moonlight was awesome. Depending upon the temperature and weather, it could be good classical skiing.

Friday Night Lights has been postponed to Friday, Feb. 29th if conditions improve. DOT trailhead is closed until it gets colder and new snow improves conditions.

6 Molly { 02.21.08 at 5:55 pm }

The Sterling Highway - DOT Trailhead is closed due to standing water on the low spots of the Raven’s Way Loop. Like 6 - 12 inches of standing water.

McNeil had six inches of new snow as of yesterday (Feb. 20), and it is snowing heavily again today. Trails have not been groomed since the new snow.

8 Chris { 02.21.08 at 11:32 pm }

Bummer, we were hoping it wasn’t going to be postponed but were still coming down to Homer this weekend….

9 Molly { 02.22.08 at 7:37 am }

Thursday, Dave rolled the 5 K loop and the sprint loop of McNeil and it is really quite nice. He did not groom Eveline because it was too soft to get from McNeil to Eveline. That trail has not been packed as much all season and it would have done more damage than good.

Work parties will be on going this weekend 2/23/08-2/24/08 on the Lookout connector trail. Meet at the Diamond ridge trailhead parking lot. 10:30 the sled leaves. Bring backcountry skis, warm clothes, water, lunch, small chainsaws, shovels, nippers.

2-22-08 2:30 pm Homestead, Sunset Loop, Midway, College Ave, Ravens Way, Demonstration Forest loop, and Headwaters Highway all groomed this morning.

Marathon Trail groomed Friday evening from Sunset Loop for about 8 km. Should be good for the weekend if it continues to cool off. The trail is generally soft. Use caution going down into Bridge Creek from both sides. The trail is still a little rough there.

14 Doug { 02.24.08 at 4:44 am }

The marathon trail was punched thru to Lookout today and will be skiable although like David said it will be soft and rough in some places. Also, there will be alot of new surprises for everyone, so be on your toes otherwise you’ll be on your butt!. There are still a few private property issues so please stay on the trail. We will most likely be grooming it tomarrow, and once again,I will encourage skiers to carry a shovel, nippers,or machete as everyone can help make the trail better. Consider the extra weight a training tool. Besides, I don’t want to hear any complaints. Thanks again to all the volunteers who showed up when they said they were.

If folks are looking for nice “toddler skiing” snow, the McNeil flats (before the first Y) or any place offtrail near McNeil Canyon School has been great this weekend for little ones out on skis - the 4 or so inches of powder on a hard crust is just right for kids trying to learn how to balance on their skis.

16 Molly { 02.26.08 at 4:28 am }

Worked a lot of the Baycrest trails, both upper and lower today. Snow up high is much nicer, down low is hard and fast. Sterling Hwy. trailhead and trails to Raven’s Way is open, some icy spots in the low areas. Moose using the trails a lot, give then a wide berth. Dave

17 Molly { 02.26.08 at 5:29 pm }

Friday Night Lights is definitely scheduled for Friday, Feb. 29th - Leap Day!! and Saturday, March 1. Bonfire 7 - 9 at the Sterling Highway/DOT Trailhead. Tiki Torches on the Raven’s Way Loop. Hot Chocolate provided. Bring your own hot dogs and alternate beverages. Fundraiser: $10 donation requested. Molly

18 Chris { 02.26.08 at 5:55 pm }

Just wanted to let you know how much enjoyed the trails out at McNeil and Sunset loop last weekend. Your groomers have done a great job! It’s too bad we missed the tiki tourches, maybe next year…

19 Kathee { 02.26.08 at 6:18 pm }

Diane groomed McNeil trails yesterday, monday afternoon 2/25. My daughter was out on these and reported great conditions.

20 Kathee { 02.27.08 at 7:38 pm }

Evaline was groomed to McNeil yesterday. (2/26) We skied from Evaline to McNeil and back. Some of the snow was blowing and already drifting across part of the trail that was not blocked from the wind. The snow was soft, but nice and the ski to McNeil was fast. We used skate skis, but nordic would probably be more suitable as parts of the trail are narrow. Beware of some looped branches sticking up here and there on the trail as it would be very easy to catch your ski under one of these.

21 Allan Phelps { 02.27.08 at 7:59 pm }

Scott and Richard, great job on the new website.

To all the groomers, a hearty thank you.
You are the unsung heros.

McNeil Canyon and Eveline were groomed Thursday, April 3. Tracks are gone but trails are in excellent condition.

37 Molly { 04.05.08 at 6:43 pm }

The Snow Shoe signs on the Baycrest Snow Shoe trail were taken down April 4th for the season, but the trail is still easily followed until or unless there is a major snow fall.

38 Molly { 04.05.08 at 6:45 pm }

Dave groomed Baycrest (Homestead, Demonstration Forest Loop, and Sunset) Saturday morning April 5th. An inch of new snow and colder temperatures make for excellent skiing.

39 Brian { 04.07.08 at 10:18 pm }

Upper and lower Baycrest, and Sunset trails groomed 9:00-12:30 4/7. Trails in great condition for the most part. Driveway intersections on Sunset a little tricky, use caution when crossing.

40 Molly { 04.08.08 at 5:17 pm }

There is excellent crust skiiing on cold mornings and after light snow fall on the snow machine trail to Caribou Lake. Access from East End Road as there is little parking on Circle Lake Road.

41 Brian { 04.09.08 at 4:28 am }

Upper Homestead, Headwaters, College, Raven’s groomed 4/8, excellent conditions.

42 Don { 04.11.08 at 5:33 am }

Dave groomed Eveline this afternoon (April 10) and conditions are gorgeous, with access from McNeil. The other trails at McNeil have 5 inches of new snow, but haven’t yet been groomed. Should be great once it’s rolled.

43 Kathee { 04.11.08 at 6:27 pm }

Thanks for grooming Eveline yesterday Dave. I got out and used the trail around 2:30 p.m. and enjoyed a bit of spring skiing, thanks to your efforts!

44 Brian { 04.11.08 at 10:57 pm }

4/11 10:30-2:00 All upper and lower Baycrest trails groomed except upper Master Blaster and Stuckagain. Sunset Loop groomed as well. Trails in great shape.

45 Don { 04.19.08 at 2:52 am }

The 5-km at McNeil was groomed yesterday and is in very good condition, but quite soft by this afternoon (4/18). Crust skiing might be good early in the morning.

46 Don { 04.29.08 at 3:35 am }

Warm days and below-freezing nights are creating outstanding crust skiing as of 4/28 at McNeil and Eveline. Conditions are icy before 8:30, and the snow gets soft by 11:30, but it’s primo 9-10 a.m.
