Skied at Eveline last Saturday. Main trail was skiable, newly brushed trails were marginal at best. As Jeanne says, “I’ll go skiing when there is another foot of snow. ” But it was skiable on the main trail. Take your oldest rock skis!
Lookout trails groomed Thanksgiving morning, SE wind 10-15 mph, snow still falling as of 10:30 am, some areas of the Hayfield as well as exposed areas are windblown with some drifting.
On Friday, Nov 27 Eveline trails had about 4″ of new snow over the trails that had been rolled on the 25th. Good classical sking conditions, some of the new trails still have some sticks that need to be cut, but the established trails are good.
12/4/09 All McNeil trails are in including the new 3 K McNeil School Loop. Tracks are set to the Lookout. Work will continue today.
Baycrest: After this week’s 2 foot storm, most of Baycrest has been groomed wide enough for classic skiing. Tracks have not been set yet. Trail construction was done on Headwaters Highway and Master Blaster, so those trails are not skiable until more snow falls. Upper trails might be good for skating, but the lower trails are best for classic.
McNeil: Most of McNeil, including the new school loop are packed and dragged and open for all skiing.
Eveline: Eveline has not been packed or rolled yet as of Friday morning, Dec. 4th. Possibly Saturday or early next week.
Eveline was packed and dragged on Monday, Dec. 7th. It is flat and skiable, but in most places it is not wide enough for skating. It is really nice snow because it was not groomed during the warm weather.
Eveline was widened on Thursday. It was above the fog, sunny and incredible.
McNeil Trails–7.5K, 5K, 3K, Sprint and School Loops– were groomed for skating and diagonal on 12/14 and are in excellent condition. New snow on 12/15 has made what was good even better. FYI– McNeil will b e groomed and track set on Mondays and Fridays. It will be groomed as needed on other days. If you are not fond of snow machines you may prefer to ski in the PM rather than the AM.
A lone wolf has been spotted at least 3 times on the Baycrest Trails. Has a black tipped tail. Seems curious and does not run away. Last spotted Monday, Dec. 14th. BC trails are excellent. Tracks are set.
December 22nd: Ski the Lookout Mt. trails today — mostly the large loop around the hayfield — and it was great! It appears they were also beginning to set the the new trials. May be good tomorrow if the weather holds the next few days. Good conditions to get the family out the ski over the holidays!
McNeil and Eveline were groomed Tuesday, Dec. 22. Skiing is excellent. Eveline will be groomed again on Thursday, Dec. 24 and tracks set possibly.
Sunset was grooomed and tracks set Wednesday, Dec. 23. Lower trails are being groomed Wednesday morning and tracks will be set as time allows. It has cooled down and the trails are good. Raven’s Way and the Stadium are being groomed for the Ski Your Age event on Dec. 26th. Contact Jan Spurkland for more information about Ski Your Age.
Lookout Mtn and Hayfield trails are in very good condition. 1-2″ of fresh snow on deep solid base. The Lookout trails have been groomed. Some soft spots to watch for, they will probably harden up with continued cold weather and grooming. Thanks Groomers!
12/29 McNeil and Eveline are icy and will not be groomed until the weather changes or the new Ginzo (sp?) groomer arrives.
1/4/10 McNeil and Eveline groomed today. Good trails with fast skiing.
Rumors are out regarding the Marathon trail being ready to ski. A few words of caution: Extremely rough. We pulled the drag with us yesterday (01/06/10) from Diamond Ridge to Crossman Ridge but I would by no means tell anyone it is ready to ski. If you should venture that direction be prepared for rough terrain.
1-9-10: I just snowshoed from Lookout to Clare’s place on Crossman Ridge via the marathon trail. The trail has been cleared and groomed from Lookout to about half-way up Crossman. Today it was hard and icy (at least for me), but with an inch or two of snow and another pass with the groomer it will be great. From the gullies on up and over Crossman, the trail has been snow-machined out, but not groomed that I could tell. There are so many snow machine tracks on top that I lost the trail altogether - it took me quite a while to get my bearings and find it again. In my opinion this section would be marginal skiing at best except maybe on touring skis. I picked up the fresh grooming just above Clare’s, but veered from the trail at that point so have no report for the rest of the way to Diamond Ridge. The good news is that the trail is WAY better than it was at this time last year!
1-15-09 Sunset groomed and in great condition. Lower Baycrest from Roger’s loop trail-head groomed and track set. Headwaters is not in skiable condition until there is at least a few more inches of snow. R&R trails to Eagle View access groomed, no track set, but hard with the couple inches of snow we’ve had on top.
Sorry date should have been 1-15-10
1-16-09 Skiied lookout hayfields and sprint loop conditions are windy and blowing snow. Helped John groom Hayfield and sprint loop as well as blue loop on Wednesday. Base is still there but grooming has been mostly obliterated by drifting…Started facebook page for trail conditions as well. I hope to include GPS Google earth links of the trails for access by all…has this been done yet ? Check for Kachemak Nordic Ski Club on facebook. Any comments feel free to give me a call 299-4154.
1/20/10 9 am-12 noon Lower Baycrest to Midway groomed, track set, good skiing!
We skied the Marathon Trail today from Sunset Loop to the gong at Lookout. Though still rough dropping into Bridge Creek the rest was very enjoyable on touring gear. It still may be a bit rough for skate gear but we’re getting there. The trail is not well marked yet dropping off Crossman Ridge into Twitter Creek but should be resolved Monday. For you who know your way I would encourage you to go check it out.
I skied McNeil mid-afternoon Friday the 29th, freshly groomed and excellent skiing
Lookout groomed wednesday 3rd, very fast skiing
The 5-k loop at McNeil was groomed today and is beautiful, with probably the best ski conditions all year. Thanks to the groomers!
Nordic skiing with waxless skiis was really nice on Saturday, Feb. 20 - nice long glides in the groomed tracks :o) Ohlson Mountain Road wasn’t nearly so nice, though…here comes breakup.
I skied Sunset Loop on yesterday. excellent skiing.
2/25 900 am-100 pm all lower trails groomed and track set except for Headwaters Hwy and DOT stadium. Trails in excellent shape except for the occasional icy patches.
McNeil Canyon School is having a winter carnival and night skate tonight, so if you’re planning a moonlight ski at McNeil a/o Eveline tonight (as I am) please park only in the lower lot at McNeil, (or at Eveline), keep your dogs under close control, and consider making a substantial donation at the refreshment concession!
Don’t ski Headwaters Highway unless you don’t mind taking your skis off to walk around the bare patches. A couple of glaciers make it pretty gnarly too. Other than that, it’s great.
2/27 900 am- 12 noon, All Lower Baycrest trails groomed except DOT stadium and connector trails to Ravens Way. Headwaters Hwy. remains very icy and ungroomed. Isolated icy patches on all tails but overall they are in very good condition.
OK folks, the Marathon Trail is ready to ski! Stutzer and I groomed to the yurt from Diamond Ridge this morning and things are looking pretty good. Not perfect, but pretty good. We went back and skied to Bridge Creek from Diamond Ridge just after grooming and other than a couple of renegade snow machine tracks, it skied just fine. Get out there and ski it.
McNeil received 4 inches of new snow Sunday night (2/28) and still has a 2+ foot base. The 5-K loop and shorter trails near the school were rolled today. Should be excellent skiing this week.
Skied @ McNeil this morning - lots of snow, drifts, etc. Beautiful! Groomers were out as I got back to the car around 11:30 AM.
To make these trail condition comments work, users need to make comments on this web site! I’ll see what I can do to get the current posts at the top of the list.
The Marathon Trail on the Lookout end was in good skatable condition on Wednesday, 3-17. It was fun to go off the trail on downhills and do wide sweeping turns even with skate skis with an inch or two of soft snow on a firm base in the afternoon.
Lower Baycrest and McNeil were groomed early the week of March 14th, I’ll check McNeil and Eveline today, 3-21.
Please help me out and post current conditions!
Kevin
Sandy skied the Marathon Trail from Upper Baycrest to Lookout today and came home all smiles and suntan. She reports great conditions for either skate or classic. Get out there and enjoy these fine spring conditions.
Eveline and McNeil both have several feet of snow with a good base and 1-3″ of soft snow on top. Ideal for on or off trail skiing. Classic tracks are set at McNeil.
Skied lower Baycrest up Serpent (to Reuben’s bench) across Midway down Far Side and Raven’s way, all primo conditions.
Beautiful skate skiing the whole way.
Sea to Ski was great. Headwaters & Raven’s Way groomed. Most other Baycrest trails had 1-3″ of soft snow on a firm base. Friday the 26th both Eveline and McNeil had been groomed - and it was possible to skate ski off the tracks around 2pm.
Skied McNeil on Monday 3/29 and the 5-k was freshly groomed that day, along with a loop through Eveline. Good skiing with four inches of new snow over a solid base.
OK you dead beats, I’m back in action. Upper Baycrest is tuned up and it was great today. Where are all of you? Usually there are multiple ski tracks before I finish grooming and today there were only two sets of tracks laid down before I got my turn and both of them were pulling sleds! I know I’ve been missing in action of late but that’s no excuse. Get up here and tear it up. It’ll give me something to do tomorrow. I miss you Women’s Masters up here beating me to the first tracks. Be sure to hit Serpent, and no snow plowing. Point ‘em down. The Rucksack Trail to Homestead is also awesome and if you get adventurous come check out the Powerline down by our place. I prefer to ski it from our driveway down and up the power line but either way is looking good. Watch out for my divot left from being stuck if you ski it in reverse. Classic track are set all around. I’ll tackle the Marathon Trail on Friday if any of you groomers are interested.
Thanks to Dave Brann for grooming the McNeil and Eveline trails this afternoon (4/1/10). They should be in excellent condition for the weekend.
Billy and I groomed Marathon all the way Friday afternoon. Good for skating - and classic tracks were set for most of the distance. Ohlson Mtn road is reported to be in breakup mode, but passable. Good skiing everywhere - telemark turn attempts on skate skis between Master Blaster and Homestead!
Billy and I groomed Marathon on Friday, and several of us skied it today (Sat, 4-3), end to end. It’s great! The Ohlson Mtn Road is super muddy, kind of passable.
Sat, April 3 - Marathon Trail was groomed Friday, skiing was great on Saturday. Ohlson Mtn Road is in breakup mode, but passable.
McNeil received several inches of heavy snow, but the groomers did a great job and today, Monday, the skiing was great. Too wet to skate ski easily off track. 3 connecting trails were groomed between the main north and south legs. Classical skiers had set off toward Eveline, I don’t know how far they got.
Eveline was groomed on Thursday and McNeil was touched up.
Crust skiing off the trails at McNeil was a bit bumpy but fantastic this morning!! I was flying and I’m not even a very good skate skier.
