Junior Nordic Tips/FAQs
Before Arriving:
● Please have your child's skis and poles labelled with their name.
● Make sure your child knows your phone number or has it tucked in their pocket.
● No Skiing in the parking lots! Gravel damages skis and creates a safety hazard.
Arrival & Schedule:
● What time should I arrive? Arrive at your designated location (McNeil School or Lookout) by 12:45 PM.
● What time does practice start? Be on skis by 1:00 PM.
Locations:
● Where are practices held? Practices are held at either McNeil School or Lookout. Refer to your registration confirmation for your assigned location.
● What if I forgot my location or have questions? Email knscjunirnordic@gmail.com
Ski Groups:
● How do I find my ski group? Look for your assigned group from last year. If unsure, ask a coach for help. Start with a slower group if necessary.
● What are the different ski group levels?
○ Sea Stars: Beginner (shuffling)
○ Puffins: Beginner Classic
○ Cohos: Intermediate/Advanced Classic
○ Sockeye: Beginner Skate
○ Harbor Seals: Intermediate Skate
○ Salmon Sharks: Advanced Skate
● How old does my child need to be to sign up? We allow ages 3 and 4 to join the Sea Stars IF there is a responsible adult with them at all times (you’re not there as a coach, but to stay with your child if they need extra help, or lose interest, they often tire quickly).
Children 5 and up is the standard age for drop off.
Weather:
● How do I know if practice is cancelled due to weather? Cancellations due to cold weather (0°F or windchill of 0°) are announced by 4:00 PM on Friday on the KNSC and Kachemak Junior Nordic Facebook pages.
What to Wear:
● What should my child wear for practice? Dress in layers for easy adjustment as they warm up. Here are some recommendations:
○ Cold Weather Gear: Hat, face covering, good gloves, wool socks.
○ Avoid heavy jackets with only cotton t-shirts. Use poly or wool layers.
○ Skip snow pants except for very young children or extremely cold weather.
○ No scarves (choking hazard) - Opt for neck gaiters, buffs, or bandanas.
○ Wear a ski hat or warm headband.
○ Dress in layers with wicking wool and poly-blend clothes.
○ Wind-resistant jacket/vest or thinner winter jacket over layers.
○ Poly shorts/skirt/wind pants over tights/long underwear (no snow pants except for very young or very cold weather).
○ Poly or wool shirts (not cotton) with a fleece sweatshirt.
○ Wool or poly socks - No cotton.
○ Windproof mittens/gloves (not expedition type).
Hydration & Snacks:
● Should my child bring food and drinks? Yes, have your child eat breakfast and lunch beforehand. They should also bring a water bottle and healthy snacks for after practice to stay hydrated and energized.
● Do I need to pack a backpack? No, coaches will carry backpacks for the children.
● Bring warm clothes and a jacket for the ride home after practice.
Illness:
● Should I send my child to practice if they are sick? Please keep sick children home to prevent the spread of illness.
