Join us for the 2024 KNSC Nordic Ski Marathon

The Marathon is a point-to-point race starting at Lookout Trails and ending at the lower Baycrest Trail system at the DOT trailhead. There are three distance options: a 42k, a 25k, and a 13k.

SHUTTLE INFO:

There will be ONE Apple bus shuttle for racers leaving the DOT trailhead parking lot at 7:45 am. The trailhead is located on Maintenance Street off of the Sterling Highway. It is the first left on Maintenance street. There will be a gear shuttle located at the parking lot near registration at Lookout mountain to bring your bags back to the finish line.

AFTERPARTY INFO:

All racers and volunteers are invited to our afterparty at the Homer Seaplane Base (1310 Lake Shore Dr) from 4-6. Complimentary soup, salad, bread and cookies will be served. There is a cash bar as well as a limited selection of N/A beverages and juice boxes. Thanks to our amazing local sponsors we have a fantastic array of door prizes (nights at local Air BnBs, kayak trips, ski touring bibs, local beer, Ski Vaans, and a massage!) and we thrilled to award first through third places with Lisa Wood mugs. Any extra race shirts will be avaliable for sale, cash and Venmo.

This event would not be possible without the generous support of our local sponsors:

The 42K and 25K courses are planned for the traditional route; point-to-point starting at Lookout Trails and ending at the Baycrest Trail system at the DOT trailhead (follow the race signs!). Information on parking for the finish will be emailed to participants a few days before the race.

13K Tour course will start and finish at the stadium at Lookout and will be timed with awards this year.

We are excited to have local ceramic artist and longtime Nordic skier, Lisa Wood, making the awards for this year's race!  Another local artist and skier, Tara Schmidt, has designed this year's race shirt, which will be available to order in the online registration process for an additional $25.  There are a limited number of shirts and avaliable; register early to get the right size!

BE AWARE: This remote course is very difficult & challenging and safety comes first. This includes looking out for others & stopping to help when someone is in need until a rescue sled arrives. Do not take chances - because a rescue will take a LONG time and there is no cell service in some areas. Use caution on the steep drops- especially if you can't see the bottom! There is no shame in side-stepping the gullies. In fact, you can side-step proudly because discretion is the better part of valor.

CUT-OFF TIME for the 42k: The race goes through remote, challenging and beautiful Alaskan terrain. To keep all of our racers safe, we have established a cut-off time at 7.5 km into the course. If racers do not reach this point at the Harbinson Road crossing just next to the parking lot at Lookout Mountain within 60 minutes of the start of the race (this will be at 10:30 am) then the skiers will be asked to surrender their bibs to either the sweeper or the crossing guard on Harbinson Road. If they choose to continue on the course it will be without the support system of the sweeper and the aid stations. This is based on a kilometer pace of 8:00, which allows for a racer to finish the 42k in 5 hours and 36 minutes.

Cut-off Time for the 25k: The cut off point for the 25 km will be at the Crossman Ridge Aid Station approximately 7.5 km into the course. The cut off time will be 11:19 am (79 minutes after the start of the race). This allows for a 10:30 kilometer pace, and allows for a racer to finish the race in 4 and a half hours. If a skier reaches Crossman Ridge Aid Station after this, they will be asked to surrender their bib to the sweeper or the aid station and can either continue on their own without race support or else get a ride back where they need to go. Please know your pace or your child’s pace and enter the 13k instead if you believe you or your child will be slower than a 10:30 kilometer pace.

Routes and Start Times:

9:30am START - 42k Lookout to Lower Baycrest DOT Trailhead.

10:00am START - 25k Lookout to Lower Baycrest DOT Trailhead.

10:30am START - 13k Lookout loop

Prizes will be awarded to the top three male and top three female finishers in the 42k, 25k and 13k at an afterparty/awards ceremony at the Homer Seaplane Base from 4-6. Awards ceremonies will start at 5 pm. Soup, salad, bread and dessert will be provided. There will be a cash bar.
