2021-2022 Season

2022 May Minutes:  The season ended with all the snow machines and ATVs in working condition.  The McNeil dog situation has improved now that dogs are not allowed on school property.  The McNeil dog parking area off Ashwood will be upgraded.  Several capital improvements are planned for Eveline SRS over the summer including a new kiosk and several interpretive signs. Milli Martin would like to donate her land in such a way that it could be used as part of the Lookout ski trail system.  Our current insurance provider is dropping KNSC at the end of August when the contract ends.   New providers are being reviewed.

2022 April Minutes: Peter Crimp is the new treasurer.  City of Homer KNSC Recreational Use Agreement was renewed.   A volunteer recognition event will take place at Grace Ridge in May.

2022 March Minutes:  Richard Burton is retiring from many years as KNSCs treasurer effective April 1st.   Peter Crimp will take over the responsibilities of treasurer with most of the actual bookkeeping being done by Homer Bookkeepers.  Two new Scandic 900 SWT snow machines from All Seasons have been ordered.   A  Grace Ridge St Patrick’s Day “Brew & Stew” took place March 17th and the Marathon race was on March 19th  .

2022 February Minutes: Richard is resigning from the Board as Treasurer.  Local bookkeepers will be interviewed to help with KNSCs books.  The Board approved ordering 2 new snow machines for next season.  The Marathon ski race will take place March 19th.   The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) $1000 Grant KNSC received will be used to purchase High School ski team equipment.

2022 January Minutes: Membership pins are being distributed; KNSC will purchase $19,600 of skis for Jr Nordic.  KNSC philosophy is if there is a kid out there 5-12 years old that wants to try skiing, let’s get them on skis.  We serve 18+% of our census area (AP to Fox River Flats).  >50% increase this year.   In contrast, Anchorage serves 1-2% of their kids in same age group.  Parking lots have been created off of Ashwood for dog owners to access the McNeil trail system.   The Eveline parking lot has been enlarged to accommodate dog owners.   All the lots are being plowed regularly.   Dogs are not allowed on McNeil School property.

2021 December Minutes: New tow behind brush cutting mower and Ginzu have arrived.  Nordic Pulse is the new grooming app that provides live GPS based grooming reports.   The data is available from KNSC website.   New webcams at Lookout & McNeil are working. Ken Jones memorial sign “Jones Junction” is being installed at Lookout.

2021 Annual Meeting Minutes November 11th: Kenny Daher, Derek Bynagle, and Bob Glen were re-elected to the Board. Administrative,  financial, and equipment reports were presented.  Kathy Sarns & Allison O’Hara were selected by the Board as volunteers of the year for their years of energetic dedication to coaching Junior Nordic and Homer Nordic.  An auction was held with all items selling for well over their “retail” value.

2021 November Minutes: All equipment is in good working order going into the new ski season.  There are concerns about snow machine availability for next year due to supply chain issues.  New trail cameras are being installed.  Jr Nordic is gearing up.  Purchasing a trail counter for Eveline was approved along with a pallet of GeoBlock for wet trail mitigation.  Wolf Ridge & Marathon trail CIRI land permits have been obtained.

2021 October Minutes: New Ginzu groomer and mower approved for purchase.  KNSC received a $45,000 unrestricted donation from an estate and $5600 from the 100 Men organization for building an “accessible” trail at Eveline.  The annual meeting will take place Thursday, November 11th at 6:30 using the same virtual format as last year.  Strategic plan is being updated.

2021 September Minutes: Membership renewal notices going out;  two Polaris ATVs and snowmachine have arrived;  KNSC was the recipient of the 100 Men Project donation for an accessible trail at Eveline; work continues on updating the strategic plan

2020-2021 Season

2021 May Minutes: The KPBSD policy of no dogs on school property will be invoked starting in September.  Dogs will no longer be allowed in the McNeil School parking lot; this means skiers with dogs will have to find alternate access to the McNeil ski area.  Skidoo cannot guarantee delivery of a Scandic 900 snow machine.  This is an issue as there are no viable alternative snow machines that would meet our grooming needs.  KNSC has an aging fleet of snow machines.

2021 April Minutes: Website software upgraded; lots of equipment repair issues with KNSC’s aging fleet;  Polaris 850 ATV purchased; Rasmussen grant received for new grooming equipment; Dogs will no longer be allowed on McNeil school property per KPBSD policy starting in September;  Board looking for new member who would be the treasurer

2021 March Minutes: The Kenai Peninsula Borough Community Assistance Program (CAP), formerly called Revenue Sharing funds were approved with KNSC getting a total of @$11,000; approximately $9000 is designated for McNeil with the remainder for the other KNSC ski areas.  Marathon March is underway with the groomers doing a stellar job of keeping the trail skatable.  Lots of kudos to Kathy Sarns for a remarkably successful Jr Nordic year and her passion for helping others to enjoy skiing

2021 February Minutes: Marathon will take place during the entire month of March or as long as conditions allow; $34,000 restricted funds earning minimal interest will be moved to Homer Foundation to manage as a non-endowment fund.  Equipment is aging, a Scandic 900 and ATV 850 need to be purchased by next season; the demonstration forest has been selected as a site for moose habitat enrichment.

2021 January Minutes: New Ginzu grooming machine ordered for McNeil; Marathon race will take place in some kind of safe format; Same for Sea to Ski; Considerable discussion about what to do with the $25,000 operating reserves & $7000 restricted donation for a snow cat.  Both are currently sitting in minimal interest-bearing accounts. This will be discussed further at February meeting.   The reality is KNSC will likely never be able to afford to buy, operate, and maintain a snow cat.  Currently Wise Construction does snow cat grooming at McNeil for a bargain basement price.

2020 December Minutes: CIRI land use permit for McNeil’s’ Wolf Ridge was approved. Membership zipper pulls have been sent out. Jr Nordic gear continues to be given out.  New Scandic 900 snow machine for McNeil is in transit.  All events still on hold because of Covid-19.

2020 Annual Meeting November 11th: The President presented a history of skiing and a tribute to KNSC’s 30 groomers who maintain 80k of trail. Board members reviewed financials and status of equipment.  Status of events on hold because of Covid-19 was discussed.  Dave Brann was given the Volunteer Appreciation award.  A formal vote for 3 Board members took place.   Online auction held for bottle of fine wine; tequila, Swix ski top, Swix ski bottoms, Alayne Tetor’s painting for the membership zipper pulls, and Kathy Sarns 2h ski lesson.

2020 November Minutes: A succession plan for the Treasurer generated a lot of discussion.  KNSC equipment has extremely high mileage; The maintenance crew does an amazing job of keeping it going but KNSC should expect the need for replacements. A new Scandic 900 is on order.  The annual meeting was planned.

2020 October Minutes: Cares grant for $9,998 received; Resolution supporting 25mph speed limit on Ohlson Mt Rd approved; Budget will be reviewed monthly as Covid-19 has made it difficult to predict if future income generating events will take place thus making it impossible to do a budget for the entire year.  Skis will be available for Jr Nordic.  New signs will be made for Baycrest & Sunset.

2020 September Minutes: Pat Irwin resigned the admin assis position during the summer so the Board approved hiring Derek Bynagle as the new administrative assistant; Event cancellations because of Covid-19 will have a huge impact on this years budget;  It is too soon to determine what events will take place’  The board has not determined what kind of annual meeting will take place
